The New Must Have Netbook?!?!?!
The New Must Have Netbook?!?!?!

This is my second Eee as I also own the Asus 1000HE. While I love the 1000HE, I was really looking forward to the 1008HA because of the slimmer design and full size right shift key. After a couple of days with the device, here are my thoughts:

Pros:

- It has a full size right shift key!!! Touch typist will appreciate this over the tiny, misplaced right shift key on the 1000HE.
- The 1008HA feels much lighter than the 1000HE. When people would pick up my 1000HE, they would be surprised by how heavy it is. The 1008HA feels great.
- Even in a slim package, the 1008HA still has all of the features you want in a Netbook: wireless N, Bluetooth, N280 processor, SDHC card slot, and decent battery life.
- I’m getting over 4 hours of battery life so far. Not bad for a 3 cell battery!!!
- It includes a slim VGA port but it includes a standard VGA adapter that is tucked away under the device.
- The 1008HA is a beautiful piece of equipment. I know this isn’t a technical benefit but it doesn’t hurt. The 1000HE is “husky” in comparison.

Cons:

- Having only 2 USB ports kinda sucks since I sometimes need to connect my phone, retractable mouse, and USB storage drive.
- As another reviewer mentioned, if you need to keep a wireless receiver plugged in for your non-bluetooh devices, the port covers will annoy you. Perhaps you can remove one of the covers?
- I prefer two separate mouse buttons instead of the rocker button. I don’t know why they switched to the rocker.
- The memory, hard drive, and battery are not user replaceable. I read that you can have these replaced at an Asus service center though. I find that 1GB of ram is fine for XP.
- Windows 7 doesn’t work yet because of video issues. I read on an Eee forum that there’s an auto login workaround if that interests you.
- It doesn’t have the legendary battery life of the 1000HE but 4 hours isn’t bad for a device this small.

Conclusion:

Whether you buy the 1008HA over the 1000HE, or the upcoming 1005HA (which is basically a 1000HE with more battery life and a full size right shift key), it comes down to this- are you willing to sacrifice battery life, a usb port, and additional cost to get a lighter, slimmer device. I like the 1008HA and highly recommend it to anyone that will appreciate this compromise. For those that prefer function over form, the 1000HE or the upcoming 1005HA should fit the bill. I don’t think you can go wrong with any of the Eee 100X series netbooks. They continue to offer all of the features at the best prices. Don’t get those cheaper, crippled netbooks. You’ll kick yourself.

UPDATE (6/30):

After using the 1008HA for a few weeks, I decided that battery life is more important than size and weight. With a fully charged 1000HE, you rarely have to look at the remaining power. You simply will not use it all before running out. While I like the 1008HA, I have the give the edge to the 1000HE. I plan to pick up the 1005HA when it ships. I suspect it will be the king of them all.

What a great machine!
This is my third eee pc. I started with the original 4G with 7″ screen. I wanted more storage and a screen that filled the form factor so I then moved up to the 9″ 900HA. At the time of the 900HA, I opted for reduced weight over increased size and chose the lighter weight 900HA over the larger but heavier 100x series. I learned my mistake, though, because the more I used the 900HA, the more annoying the typing errors due to the smaller keyboard became. You might not think a diagonal inch could make such a difference, but it does. Since getting the 900HA, I’ve gotten two 1000HAs for my sons and recommended the 1000HA to my sister and all three of them love them. Still, the increased weight kept me from taking the plunge for a 10″ netbook myself, that is, until the 1008HA came along.

As with everything, the 1008HA comes with pluses and minuses.

The biggest plus is the weight: 2lbs 5 oz. compared to 2lbs 7.5 oz for the 900HA and 3lbs 4 oz for the 1000HA (and 3 lbs 5 oz for the latest 1000HA with chicklet keyboard).

Another plus is the Atom N280 processor which, while not a barn burner, is noticeably faster than the N270 in other models.

There is also Bluetooth and 820.11n wireless, but those are of no real interest to me since I don’t have an 802.11n router (but perhaps I should start thinking of one!).

The only clear minus for me is the port covers which make it inconvenient to connect things. They would be particularly inconvenient if I wanted to keep the teeny (1/4″ extension) USB receiver from a Logitech VX Nano Cordless Laser Mouse for Notebooks (Black) plugged in permanently. Unfortunately, Logitech does not make a Bluetooth version of the VX nano.

Then there are two things that are a positive or negative depending on your point of view.

The first is the nonremovable battery. If the battery were to die, it would have to be returned to Asus for service. I tell myself that by the time this happens I would probably be wanting to replace the machine. The reason I view it as a positive and not an outright negative is that the Li-polymer battery, which can be molded however the manufacturer wishes, helps give the 1008HA its reduced weight. Asus will shortly be introducing the 1005HA, which has a replaceable battery but is otherwise identical to the 1008HA. However, 1005HA’s weight will be back up in the 3 lb 2 oz range.

The second is the glare screen. It can take some getting used to. I don’t have any problems with my appearance, but if I wanted my face for wallpaper, I’d have taken my picture an uploaded it. However, so far I haven’t found the adjustment to be difficult. The biggest surprise was that outdoors the glare screen on the 1008HA turned out to be easier to read than the matte screen on my 900HA! The trick was to have the screen facing the sun, but at an angle so that the sun was not reflecting in my eyes. With the back of the screen toward the sun, the 1008HA’s screen is unreadable, but the 900HA’s screen was no great shakes either.

I won’t paint a pretty picture. I spent two days debating whether to keep the 1008HA or return it for what is now a considerably cheaper 1000HA, but I found myself getting used to the glare screen, felt I could easily live with the port covers, and decided to keep the 1008HA because of its reduced weight.

Try before you buy
Do yourself a favor. Before you order one of these, get your hands on one and try it out first. You may have heard that the display is “very glossy”, but until you actual see it, you have no idea. I have never seen a screen as reflective as this one. For a machine in which the emphasis is clearly on the aesthetics, I can’t for the life of me imagine why anyone thought this was a good idea.

Some may say that you’ll get used to it, but my response is, why should you have to? It’s not as if this machine has such overwhelming advantages, that the tradeoff is acceptable. Also, machines this portable are often intended for outdoor use; if you’re one of those people with that in mind, this display is completely unusable in that kind of lighting.

So yes, it’s small, light and stylish, but with a display that ranges from annoying to difficult to impossible to use, given the light conditions, I’d have a hard time recommending this to anyone.

Excellent Laptop/Desktop replacement
I have owned this laptop for just under a year now, and I have loved it since day one. The speed, processing power, graphics performance, and versatility of this machine makes it worth the cost. Having used this laptop for just about everything you can think of, I have found it able to hold up to every task I ask of it. Whether it’s the compilation of home made movies I’ve created in excess of one hour in length, and requiring large quantities of RAM, which it handled wonderfully, or gaming on such titles as Call of Duty 4 modern warfare which can be played with the settings just about as high as you want to go, or even Crysis, which is a pretty demanding game. The size of the 1080p screen and the blu-ray player make for beautiful experience when watching HD movies. Also the HDMI output makes for plugging into hotel flat screen TV’s a sinch, and much nicer than paying $15 for a hotel title. The full keyboard with numberpad is excellent and the raised keys make for an extremely easy, and comfortable typing experience. With a super fast WiFi, and the built in webcam, I am able to keep in touch with my family on a level that I have never been able to in the past.

Overall I rate this laptop a 4 out of 5 stars, as there are a few things more that I would wish for, even though it seems to do just about everything you could dream of. It has only 3 USB 2.0 ports.. there is only so much room for peripheral inputs on a laptop, but 3 USB ports can be somewhat frustrating when you use a lot of external media devices, or if you have say a cell phone charger, thumb drive and a usb mouse plugged in.. you have to remove one of the devices to plug anything else in. For smaller laptops to come with 4 ports, I was somewhat disappointed in this. There is also, no sata port for external devices. This is somewhat annoying as it can be up to 3 times faster than USB 2.0. for external HD’s. It comes with compact Flash port, which I don’t even know of anyone that uses this input anymore, but no XD card slot, a rather common one.

Lastly, this is not a laptop to take to the coffee shop that has no plug in. This is basically a desktop replacement, and it needs to stay near power. Also, It’s big. I’ve heard from everyone how large this piece of equipment is. As long as you don’t mind the size, weight, and it being somewhat cumbersome in transportation, it will do just about anything you ask of it. If I had the choice to make all over again, I would choose the same laptop.

The product Sony laptop VGN-AW270Y is a very good quality product with a problem after its use. When I bought this laptop it had the choice to select the casing as metal or with the metal casing and a support pad built on carbon fiber, where the user supports hands-palms. You might think carbon-fiber? If you have heard carbon fiber is used in airplanes, therefore it must be very strong. The pad looks that way in the start, but after a 6 months of use the carbon fiber pad in my laptop has started to release its glue from its base and expanding by creating hills that hinder your work with the laptop. In addition this carbon-fiber pad by detaching itself from the metal base it has opened the internal compartments to be in contact with environment. The laptop VGN-W270Y has good resources: 1TB hard drive, 6 GB of mem, Intel dual processor 2.66 GHz speed and is a work force. I wish it had more usb slots, than 3. I am writing this review, to warn the future buyer, that if you plan to buy this type of laptop with carbon-fiber pad where you support your hands, it can be problematic as in my case. Better buy the laptop with metal pad base support. If you buy with carbon-fiber pad and if you have the surprise problematic pad, Sony will not replace it with metal, but it will replace again with the same material, which I would expect in about 6 months again to come to the same problematic shape as the first case.

Love this Laptop
I am a PC guy, but I am also familiar with Macs. I love the Sony VAIO…this is my third one since 2001 and they are all still working great. This new one though is the best. My favorite aspects are the beautiful screen, Windows 7, and the Blu-ray player. I have used it for a couple weeks now, and it really is a laptop I just love to work on. The new graphical items in Windows 7 are awesome, which makes the user experience much more fun. The VAIO also comes with pre-installed software, but it’s all stuff you want to keep on it–like the Sony audio/video applications. And again, I just can’t stress enough how wonderful the screen is. My wife is a photographer, and she has taken some photos that just have that “so real” look to them on the screen…kind of like viewing a Blu-ray moview on a great TV. I am very pleased with this purchase.

Beautiful screen
Pros:

- Wide & bright screen, good enough to watch movies.
- Fancy body design, looks beautiful.
- Spaced keys, makes typing very comfortable.
- good quality webcam/mic that works in low light and can track face movements.

Cons:

- Short Battery life.
- Does not have the modem jack as it shows in the product description and the picture.
- No backup OS DVD. Recovery partition on HDD.

Overall a good desktop replacement.

Excellent Laptop!
I bought this notebook to replace my older Vaio.

The screen is beautiful, it plays blu ray movies, I love the keyboard and Windows 7 is excellent!

The only thing I dislike is the placement of the USB ports. Other than that, I’m very happy with my purchase.

Great compact laptop!
I have owned this laptop for about a month and I absolutely love it. It is my first laptop (secondary PC) and love that it is light and very compact. The battery life is great too - lasting anywhere from 6 - 7 hours which is impressive. The machine stays cool, just very slight warmth on the bottom but not bad at all.

I do not use it for gaming but for normal web browsing, email and occasional youtube videos, and find the processer’s speed to be more than sufficient.

The only cons I can think of is that the speakers are weak (but okay for my purpose) and the power button is very small. You have to use a fingernail to depress the slim bar but not really an issue.

Overall, I am very happy with this purchase from Amazon!

An excellent choice for fiber therapy
Metamucil is a great way to get added fiber. The orange sugar-free smooth texture version is less gritty than the original texture. The orange flavor is pleasant and goes down easily. I take it regularly myself to keep regular and it works just as it should. And it has the added benefit of being good for my cholesterol.

Note: Different Metamucil powder formulations have different instructions for mixing. Some doses are measured by teaspoons and some are tablespoons. This particular formulation is rounded teaspoon. Check the label carefully.

A FEW THINGS TO REMEMBER

* A good rule of thumb is not to take fiber at the same time as other medicines as they may bind to the fiber and not get absorbed. Take your other medicines at least 2 hours apart from the Metamucil.

* Mix with a nice tall glass of water. You might want to drink some extra water afterwards to wash it down. If you fail to heed the water warning, you risk choking or getting completely plugged up — the exact opposite of what you are trying to accomplished.

* Don’t expect immediate relief. Use it every day for a few days.

* The gas problem will eventually go away. Start low and increase fiber intake slowly to help with this problem.

* Wash your glass out immediately or else it will stick to your glass and be difficult to remove.

* Fill the glass with water and then add the Metamucil. If you do it the other way around, you may have a big clump on the bottom of your glass that doesn’t dissolve.

WHO SHOULDN’T TAKE METAMUCIL?

* Anyone who cannot drink the required amount of water.

* Anyone who has trouble swallowing.

* Anyone who has a bowel obstruction.

It may seem strange at first since Metamucil is labeled a laxative, but it can also be used for chronic diarrhea. It works by absorbing water and thereby adding bulk to the stool. Bulky stools move faster down the intestines. Because Metamucil absorbs water, it does not cause diarrhea but rather can help it.

As always, if the change in bowel movement is recent and doesn’t improve, a physician should be contacted.

it sure does what you want it to do
Metamucil Smooth Texture Sugar Free Powder does an excellent job of keeping people “regular.” The powder comes in a strong canister and as long as you use this before the expiration date you’ll get the intended effect of this over the counter laxative.

It’s very easy to use Metamucil. Just take one teaspoonful and add that into a beverage by stirring it into a drink of 8 ounces or maybe slightly more. You can do this up to three times a day. It always works well for me; I usually take it with water but I know people who take this with orange juice and other beverages.

The makers of Metamucil mention that fiber can help your heart over the long run–and they are right. This is another huge benefit of using Metamucil. I also really like that this product is sugar free.

Of course, I would keep this out of the reach of pets and children. You DON’T want them ingesting this. There’s also one thing more–they say that Metamucil has a smooth texture; but sometimes I notice that it can “clump” in the beverage I want to drink it with. I would be careful to stir in the Metamucil very carefully to avoid “clumping.”

Overall, this product does a great job of doing what you want it to do. It’s handy to keep some around the house if you are occasionally constipated.

May help you with irregularity of the other kind
I am using the CVS brand comparable product of orange flavor sugar free fiber supplement/laxative and it has helped me tremendously with my loose bowel movements. I have increased my fiber intake and I am also drinking lactose free 2% Valio milk (tastes great)or almond milk (Silk brand tastes better than long shelf life Almond Dream). Drinking milk and eating ice cream seemed to be upsetting my digestive system. Cheese doesn’t seem to bother me. What I have found using the Metamucil comparable product is that I feel less agitated and even though I still have frequency of bowel movements in the morning, they are more solid, and as a result, my digestive system seems calm and I feel more energized. Also I have little or no bloating. I wish that I could say that I’ve lost weight, but I haven’t yet - that will obviously take more work and additional diet modifications and exercise due to my perimenopausal condition. My goal is to get at least 25 grams of fiber a day. Metamucil does not seem to worsen loose bowel movements even though it is a laxative - it really seems to help with forming solid stools that are easy to pass. I drink Metamucil at bedtime and once or twice during the day along with other whole grain fibers or legumes and it seems to be a good start towards improving my overall feeling of wellbeing. I drink Lifeway plain and flavored kefir as a great tasting probiotic. (has 3 grams inulin fiber) I also eat toasted Mestemacher whole grain bread almost everyday and sometimes twice a day (also available on Amazon and has 6 grams of whole grain fiber wheat free per slice). Other than that, I have not changed my diet at all. I have also incorporated eating Metamucil wafers, but not as much recently. If you eat them too much, you may grow tired of the taste and need to take a break as I am doing. I recommend that you eat them along with a warm drink such as tea or coffee. Back to this product - if you add a heaping teaspoon to a relatively shallow glass with a rounded bottom (a thick glass goblet), and then quickly stir it up and drink it, you should be able to get most of the powder dissolved with little effort. I then quickly rinse the glass. It is an easy and quick process and in no way do you feel that you could choke on the mixture. (one of my fears of psyllium husk fiber) Keep in mind, however, that you may experience some cramping and discomfort early on incorporating Metamucil and adding fiber to your diet - especially if your diet has been void of fiber. And take note - salad and many vegetables do not have as much fiber as you’d think. Start reading labels for fiber content. Cooked oatmeal is also a great addition.

Great Value
The description isn’t entirely clear but you get three 216-ct packages for the price listed (so 648 wipes total). If you’re able to take advantage of the super-saver shipping, you end up paying just a smidge over 3 cents per wipe, which is about what I was paying for some store-brand wipes…except I don’t have to worry about needing to use 3 or 4 wimpy wipes to do the job of 1 or 2 Huggies wipes, nor do I need to leave the house to get these.

After 5 straight years of changing diapers, I still prefer the Huggies wipes above all others, so I’m glad I can find them at a decent price here at Amazon.

Excellent GENTLE baby wipe! Great for whole family to use!
We love these Huggies Natural Care Fragrance Free Baby Wipes! (Fragrance Free, not “unscented” which just means the smell is masked.) These wipes are strong, but gentle, on tender skin. Our day care center uses only this particular baby wipe and they recommended it. We like to keep a supply handy in both bathrooms for everyone to use. Remoisten the wipes with steam-distilled water, if needed, because it is hypoallergenic, too, and won’t ruin the nice fresh smell of these wipes.

Great product, great price
Love the pop up and tear off ease of these wipes. I just bought one regular tub from the store and refill it with these. So easy to get a single cloth one-handed.

The babies love it!
I bought this product as my daughter wanted organic, kosher food for her twins…the babies love it and the quality is apparent…good price and well packaged on delivery…it sure saves time to get it on line…I am now buying all of this brand I can, and they have all the age appropriate groups easily labeled so you can figure out if you are buying the right food for the babies age…

Sweet Potato and Apricot Blend
My seven month old recently moved into stage two foods and has been enjoying the various combinations that Earth’s Best offers. He absolutely loves this apricot and sweet potato blend, he kicks his feet with excitement with each bite — I can’t seem to get the next spoonful in his mouth fast enough. He also really likes the sweet potato and cinnamon and the pumpkin and apple blends.

Sounded great but my son would not eat it!
My son, who eats almost anything, would only eat 2 - 3 bites of this before refusing anymore. Don’t order unless (1) you know your baby loves sweet potatoes and apricots and (2) he/she is a great eater already.
